Testing & Rank

Shidokan is a traditional dojo and maintains a traditional ranking structure. All ranks beneath black belt are called Kyu ranks, which will be designated by the wearing of a white belt. All students when beginning training begin at 6th Kyu and continue to 1st Kyu, through a series of tests, and typically will test for their first rank of 6th Kyu after approximately 3 months of consistent training. Children under 16 will begin at the 6th Kyu level, and will have a color belt "junior" ranking structure.

Shidokan is an affiliate of Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU) under Mitsugi Saotome Shihan. ASU begins ranking at the age of 16; therefore all "junior" ranks will be considered dojo ranking. Once a student reaches the age of 16 that student may challenge the Kyu test appropriate to the students proficiency level, but no higher than sankyu (3rd kyu). Once the test is passed the ranking will then be recognized by ASU. Certificates will be received, through ASU, for all Kyu ranks 6th Kyu through 1st Kyu, and all "junior" ranks will be provided by Shidokan.

All levels of black belt are called Dan ranks. Dan ranks begin with the 1st degree black belt, which is called Shodan and is roughly translated as "the beginning", and continue through to 10th dan. Testing for dan ranks will only be conducted at regional seminars, and will be administered by Mitsugi Saotome Shihan or Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan. These ranks will be registered with Honbu Dojo in Japan, which is the Aikido World Headquarters, and certificates from Japan will be issued.

Testing is conducted every 3 months, and is based on a collective of hours, knowledge and proficiency for the level (Kyu Rank) that is being tested for. One day constitutes one hour, and each level has a required number of hours necessary to become eligible to test. In addition, knowledge and a proficiency in technique, for the Kyu rank tested for, is also required to test.

All tests are based on a minimum of hours and months of training, as well as the techniques in which a student is required to demonstrate proficiency.

Aikido is based on respect and understanding. Shidokan has attempted to remain as traditional as possible. All students wear a white belt for all Kyu ranks, with the exception of "junior" ranks, and are encouraged to wear a hakama (pleated skirt of the Samurai) over their GI (uniform) after their first test. The purpose of wearing the hakama is to enhance and promote proper movement and posture. The purpose for all students to wear a white belt is to discourage conceit and practice humility and respect. To teach one that we do not know anything of another, and to respect them as life and human beings is the goal of Shidokan.
