SHIDOKAN - "The place for the study of Leadership to Protect Society "
Course Objective

These courses are offered to promote inner-peace, acceptance and understanding of others and those things around us, which we cannot change. It is to bring awareness to that which is in each one of us, and to provide an atmosphere to practice those qualities that can be taken and exercised in everyday life. Martial Arts are to promote Peace, peace begins within oneself and only then can it be outwardly expressed.

This is practiced through relaxation exercises combining proper breathing with movement, and appropriate mental state. The techniques learned and developed through these exercises are applied to physical technique in order to learn how to utilize ones true power.

Power comes from ones proper use of nature's energy. Nature is peaceful, and is always in accord with itself. When nature becomes disrupted due to an opposing force it gracefully brings itself back to its original state without compromising its integrity, this is Budo (martial way). To always be in a state of peace, is our study and practice, only to become disrupted by an opposing force of negative energy, is our test. To naturally and gracefully blend with that negative energy, without compromising integrity, and to bring that opposing force to a state of peace and resolution is the Art of Peace, and the objective of these courses.

Etiquette

Proper etiquette and respect of others is observed and expected. There are a number of formal and informal etiquette protocols, as these arise they will be addressed. Questions regarding proper etiquette are encouraged. Etiquette is based on common courtesy and will come naturally. Understand that humility is healthy for growth and develops respect. Ridicule, belittlement and degradation do not create humility or teach respect, but rather resentment, and are not practiced or tolerated. Understanding creates humility and develops respect, and Desert Wind Desert Wind Martial Arts promotes understanding.

Class

During class the student will learn all aspects of Budo and apply the principles and concepts to their physical technique. All Doka (students of the way) in throwing arts, will be taught proper Ukemi (rolling and falling) in order to protect oneself from injury when thrown or balance is lost, open hand technique will be practiced from the kneeling position as well as standing. Open hand technique will consist of both Uke (attacker) and Nage (defender) with and without weapons, Nage empty handed and Uke with weapons, and the hand arts will be performed from both the kneeling and the standing positions.
Aikido

All Aikidoka (one who studies Aikido) will be taught proper Ukemi (rolling and falling) in order to protect oneself from injury when thrown or balance is lost, techniques will be practiced from the kneeling position as well as standing. Open hand technique will consist of both Uke (attacker) and Nage (defender) with and without weapons, Nage empty handed and Uke with weapons, and the hand arts will be performed from both the kneeling and the standing positions.

Techniques in Aikido are derived form the sword-work of the Samurai. Those basic movements and principles will be developed though the weapons training. Weapons work will be taught through basic Kata (forms and movement), paired weapons practice, and empty hand techniques. There are a number of kata with Jo and Bokken, which will be covered throughout the students training. Weapons practice is performed to build ones center and whole body unity with movement, and directly relate to the hand arts in Aikido.

Equipment

The uniform is an Aikidogi, (or dogi, most commonly know as a gi). This can be any white or natural gi. Traditionally a Judogi is worn to withstand the wear, however a white Karategi may be worn if desired. The Hakama (pleated skirt of the samurai) is worn over the gi and it is encouraged that the student begin wearing the hakama after the first test in order to promote good posture and proper movement. The hakama can be either blue or black; color has no significance to rank. A white belt is to be worn by all Kyu ranks (ranks under black belt). Color belts are reserved for children. The weapons used in Aikido are the Tanto (wooden knife), Bokken (wooden training sword) and Jo (short staff). These can be found in various types of wood and can vary in quality and cost.
