What equipment do I need to start?
Upon enrollment the student will receive a white or natural single weave Judo Gi and an organization Handbook. The Hakama (black or blue, pleated skirt type pants) is not required, however all students are welcome to wear it from their first day. It is recommended that the student wait until their first test prior to purchasing and wearing the Hakama. Personal weapons are optional, as the dojo has plenty for the students to use.

How much does the equipment cost?
As with anything, equipment costs will vary on quality and manufacturer/supplier. Judo Gi’s can range from $50 and go up to a couple hundred dollars. Hakama can range from $60 and go up to hundreds of dollars. Weapons can range from $20 and go up to a couple hundred dollars. Again remember, initial cost can be very inexpensive depending on individual preference and desire.

Do you sell the equipment there at the dojo?
Yes. We carry inexpensive Judo Gi and Hakama. Shidokan encourages that the student consider the quality of the Hakama prior to the student making the decision to purchase. Please inquire as to cost when you enroll.
No, we do not carry weapons.

Where else can I find the equipment needed to train?
There are some suppliers listed on our links page as well as the local Martial Arts Supply store.

What should I expect the first class?
All prospective students are welcome to observe any class at any time. The prospective student is also welcome to participate in a class at no obligation. A liability waiver and release will be required. Loose fitting clothes (sweats and a T-shirt is perfectly appropriate) may be worn. The student will participate in stretching, Center and Ki (internal energy) development exercises, Ukemi (falling and rolling) practice and Shikko (knee walking) exercises, then a short water break and return to the mat for instruction. It is suggested that all students only do what is appropriate, anything that is uncomfortable do not do. Everything is usually explained and questions are encouraged.

Are there many women that study Aikido?
Yes. There are many women that study Aikido around the world. It has been suggested that women more naturally develop an understanding over men due to their inherent nurturing ability. There are many women that study Aikido here at SHIDOKAN.

Is there an age limit?
All students 13 and up are in the ‘General’ Aikido classes, and children 6 through 12 in the ‘Aikido Kids’ class. Some students age 12 will be placed in the ‘Adults’ class depending on that child’s maturity and size (to be determined on a case-by-case basis).

How do I get rank?
Students will be required to test for each rank. SHIDOKAN is a traditional dojo and the traditional belt ranking system is followed. There were traditionally 6 Kyu (ranks under black belt) ranks. Colored belts were originally designed for children, and they are reserved for the children. The children will not wear the Hakama. The adults will not receive colored belts, but they will receive certificates for their ranking. The adults remain white belt until they test and receive their black belt.

How long does it take to receive a Black Belt?
Typically, a good rule of thumb is 5 years per Dan (black belt rank) up to 3rd Dan, and 8 to 10 years each to receive 4th and 5th Dan, and approximately 30 plus years at 5th Dan and higher. Aikido is not an art of rank…

Are there competitions in Aikido?
No. There are no competitions in Aikido just workshops and seminars typically conducted by a high ranking instructor hosted by a Dojo. There is one style of Aikido that does compete, Tomiki, and it is believed that there is only one school of its type in the United States on the east coast.

How big are the classes?
Classes are typically between 10 and 20 people. Most classes at SHIDOKAN are ‘capped’ at 20, due to safety and quality of instruction.

How do I enroll?
Please call anytime to set up an appointment to enroll in the class Monday thru Friday. See the information regarding the rates for the class and enrollment on our rates page.
